APPROPRIATING SHAKESPEARE WITH AN EAST EUROPEAN AGENDA
-MATEI VISNIEC’S RICHARD III WON’T TAKE PLACE
Invitat: prof. dr. Mădălina Nicolaescu
Prezentare:
While focusing on Visniec’s play, the talk will also consider larger issues pertaining to the specificity of East European Shakespeare adaptations in the 20th and 21st centuries. As such, it will start with a brief survey of the categories of adaptations discussed in Shakespeare studies to identify where Eastern European appropriations could fit in. Eugene Ionesco, Heiner Muller as well as a few contemporary Bulgarian playwrights will be included in the discussion to raise the issue of political commitment and subversion, as possible specific aspects of the East European area. Visniec’s play will be considered mainly from two perspectives, both defining a political agenda – a) the figure of the tyrant/the totalitarian leader; b) practices of censorship used for Shakespeare productions in the Cold War period.
